What are Munchkins?

Munchkins are like a domestic cat on short legs.  I am sure
you are wondering how the Munchkins got their short legs!
Well, the short legs are caused by a natural occurring
genetic mutation.  So no, we did not create this breed like
we did a lot of the other breeds of cats.

Many people compare Munchkins to the dachshund because
they both have short front legs, but that is about the only
thing they have in common.  Munchkins do not have any
spinal problems like some Dachshunds have.

A lot of people also worry about whether Munchkins don't
have a very good life because of their short legs.  They are
very happy cats and get around great even with their short
legs.  They are much faster than my long legged cats
surprisingly!  I am sorry to tell you Munchkins can still
jump on the counter and steal food just as well as any other
cat.  Their short legs do not hinder their abilities to walk,
run, jump, hunt or play in any way.

What are Munchkin's personalities like?

Munchkins are a generally sweet breed of cat and very
playful.  Every cat has its own personality, so nobody can
really say exactly what the breed personality is.  Though in
my experience Munchkins are very playful, sweet and
affectionate.  They are very, very cute to watch play and
run around with their short little legs.  I have also found
that they are very smart.  My Munchkins always find out
how to open up the food containers and eat the food.

What kind of varieties are there in Munchkins?
Munchkins can come in any coat color, eye color and coat
length you can think of!  People are also breeding munchkins
with other breeds to create new breeds and get different
coat types and folded ears ect.

You can even get Munchkins on long legs.  When a Munchkin
has kittens, she can have an all short legged litter, an all
long legged litter, or a mix of both.  So if you want that
wonderful personality, but not the big price tag, a long
legged Munchkin is the way to go!

What are some health problems common in
Munchkins?
Munchkins are actually a very healthy breed o cat.  Many
people think that Munchkins have heart problems, but that
is simply not true!  There have been years of studies done
on the Munchkin and there have not been any diseases
specific to the breed.

There is one disease that seems to be popping up in
Munchkin kittens although it is not very common.  The
disease is called
lordosis.  Lordosis can be found in any
breed of cat, not only Munchkins.
